Senator Mitch McConnell remained silent as reporters pressed him with questions about his health and his wife's response to his hospitalization on Wednesday. Security and aides surrounded the 84-year-old Kentucky Republican as journalists called out to him.
"How’s it going, Mitch? Can we get a thumbs up?" one reporter asked. Another inquired, "Were you upset that Elaine didn’t promptly return to see you in the hospital, sir?" referring to his wife, former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao.
"Senator, how are you feeling today?" a reporter repeatedly called out. "Can you say a word for us, sir?" McConnell did not respond as the group moved past the cameras.
The encounter occurred amid ongoing scrutiny of McConnell's health following a series of falls and public freezing episodes in recent years. He returned to Capitol Hill last week after a nearly three-month absence that followed a fall in June. At the time of his absence, his office stated he was being treated for mild pneumonia.
McConnell stepped down as Senate Republican leader at the start of 2025 and announced weeks later that he would not seek reelection. His current term is scheduled to end in January 2027.
