Actor Matthew McConaughey described a past encounter at the U.S.-Mexico border where invoking the name of his former co-star Jennifer Lopez and their film "The Wedding Planner" helped resolve a difficult situation. McConaughey recounted the incident on a recent episode of the "Happy Sad Confused" podcast.
He explained that while crossing the border late one night, he was stopped by officials. Describing the encounter as "one of those pullovers where they noticed me, [a] gringo in a nice truck," McConaughey decided to mention Lopez.
"I brought up, 'You guys know Jennifer Lopez? Ever see The Wedding Planner?' That was me," he shared. According to McConaughey, the officers reacted positively, leading to a group photo and his subsequent release.
McConaughey, 56, and Lopez, 57, starred together in the 2001 romantic comedy "The Wedding Planner," where they played a pediatrician and a wedding planner, respectively, who fall for each other. The film marked a significant on-screen pairing for the two actors.
He also noted that other film projects, including "Sahara" and "The Lincoln Lawyer," have previously assisted him in similar run-ins.
In 2021, McConaughey and Lopez virtually reunited to commemorate the 20th anniversary of "The Wedding Planner." During their Instagram Live reunion, Lopez recalled a specific scene where McConaughey told her he was about to kiss her, a moment she remembered clearly.
McConaughey has previously praised Lopez's professionalism, describing her as a "five-threat" performer in a 2024 interview with People magazine. He lauded her ability to be precise and well-prepared on set, noting her efficiency during filming.
"I've never seen someone be able to choreograph something so cleanly and clearly and actually hit the coordination of a scene," McConaughey said at the time, recalling how Lopez consistently hit her marks during takes.
