Bryan Mbeumo scored two goals to lead Manchester United to a 2-1 victory over Atletico Madrid in a pre-season friendly at the Strawberry Arena in Stockholm. The win, secured in front of 21,000 fans, also saw notable performances from emerging academy talents.
Atletico Madrid took an early lead in the fifth minute through Arnau Ortiz. Despite facing saves from Jan Oblak to Luke Shaw and Amad Diallo, Manchester United could not find an equalizer before halftime. Diallo was making his first appearance since participating in the World Cup with Ivory Coast.
Shortly after the restart, Mbeumo converted a penalty kick after Shea Lacey was fouled. In the 74th minute, Jack Fletcher provided the assist for Mbeumo's second goal, securing the Snapdragon Cup for Manchester United.
Mbeumo's performance highlighted his potential as a centre forward, a position where the team may seek additional support. With Benjamin Sesko recovering from injury and Joshua Zirkzee's future uncertain, Mbeumo demonstrated his capability to play through the middle, in addition to his usual role on the right flank.
"I think obviously I have the luck to be able to play both positions, but I can't really choose," Mbeumo said. "Obviously I've done great things on the right wing, but some good things as a striker as well. So I think I'm more experienced on the wing, but I enjoy playing as striker."
Shea Lacey, who scored in the previous 5-0 win over Rosenborg, continued his strong pre-season form. Deployed in a No. 10 role and later on the right flank, Lacey's movement and energy troubled Atletico's defense. He earned the penalty that led to the equalizer with his skillful play.
Lacey's ability to deliver with either foot and his tactical awareness were evident throughout the match. Alongside Lacey, Jack Fletcher also made a significant impact, intercepting a pass and crossing for Mbeumo's winning goal.
Academy Prospects Earn Senior Debuts
The match also provided senior debuts for academy players JJ Gabriel and Jim Thwaites, both of whom entered the game in the 82nd minute. Gabriel, who is not yet 16, showed eagerness to get on the ball, attempting a shot that was blocked and drawing a foul in the penalty area.
Manager Michael Carrick expressed satisfaction with the team's performance and the opportunities given to younger players. "The senior players looking strong and fit, and the younger players are doing really well. Jimmy and JJ coming on at the end are two younger players again. They had a first taste for it for us, so it's great for me to be in a position to give opportunities to the boys," Carrick stated.
Midfield and Defensive Notes
Mason Mount has been a consistent performer in midfield, showcasing sharpness and contributing offensively while also providing defensive support. With Kobbie Mainoo and Youri Tielemans yet to return from the World Cup, the midfield competition is expected to be intense.
Lenny Yoro, filling in at right-back due to the absence of Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui, delivered another solid performance. "Firstly, I’m a centre-back, I’m just playing there because Diogo and Mazraoui aren’t coming back yet," Yoro commented. "I prefer centre-back, but if you can play two or three positions I’ll take it. The coach tried me at right-back and I’m doing well so it’s good for me and the team."
In other team news, goalkeeper Altay Bayindir's time at Old Trafford appears to be nearing an end, with the club reportedly in talks for a loan move to Celta Vigo. Bayindir was an unused substitute against Atletico Madrid, with third-choice goalkeeper Tom Heaton playing the full match.
Manchester United will continue their pre-season schedule with matches against Paris Saint-Germain, Leeds, and AC Milan before commencing their Premier League campaign against Hull City in three weeks.
