Mbappe Explains Defiance on Ceuta Solidarity Shirts
Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappe clarified his decision to cover up pre-game shirts supporting the Spanish enclave of Ceuta during a migrant crisis.
Kylian Mbappe has addressed his decision to not wear Real Madrid's solidarity t-shirts for the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, stating that while he stands in solidarity with the region, he did not want to prioritize one form of suffering over another.
Mbappe, along with teammates Vinicius Jr and Ibrahima Konate, were the only players to conceal the pre-game shirts designed to show support for Ceuta amid a migrant crisis. The act drew attention and was seen by some as division within the team.
"I want to explain this clearly so people understand," Mbappe told AS. "It was the club's decision to include the jersey, to have us wear it. We players had to wear it. The first thing I want to say is that I stand in full solidarity with Ceuta and with all the victims.
"Because before I’m a player, I’m a human being. But I also wanted to make a gesture and spare a thought for all the immigrants who have lost their lives and who are also living in harsh conditions."
He added that the situation was difficult because he did not want to be perceived as being against the people of Ceuta, emphasizing his support for them. However, he also felt compelled to acknowledge the suffering of migrants.
"I aim to send a message of positivity and peace, and I hope this situation is resolved quickly," Mbappe stated.
The shirts the players were meant to wear read "We are all Caballas," a nickname for the people of Ceuta. The controversy arose earlier this summer when Spain faced a significant border crisis, with thousands of migrants, primarily young Moroccan men, arriving in Ceuta. At least 57 people reportedly died during the journey.
Real Madrid, along with other clubs, had opted to acknowledge the situation. However, Barcelona chose not to wear the t-shirts for their LaLiga fixture.
While the club acknowledged Elche's request to show support and stated they respected differing opinions, giving players the freedom to choose, the actions of Mbappe, Vinicius Jr, and Konate reportedly angered some supporters.
Spain has been addressing the situation, with Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez indicating efforts to manage accommodation for migrants and facilitate returns to Morocco. The Spanish government aims to have the situation under control by the end of the year, while appealing for patience from Ceuta's residents.
