A high-ranking aide to New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani reportedly contacted ABC News executives in June to express strong objections after "The View" co-host Sara Haines referred to congressional candidate Darializa Avila Chevalier as an "antisemite." The aide suggested that such remarks could jeopardize future appearances on the program by the mayor and other progressive candidates.

Mamdani had previously sought to have Avila Chevalier and fellow Democratic socialist Claire Valdez appear on "The View" earlier this year. However, these requests were reportedly denied, with producers citing an ongoing Federal Communications Commission probe into the program for alleged liberal bias and an abundance of caution. An ABC source also indicated that "The View" rarely hosts non-elected political candidates.

Candidate and Remarks

Haines made the "antisemite" comment on June 24, during an episode of "The View" that aired shortly after Avila Chevalier won her Democratic primary race. Haines took issue with Avila Chevalier's participation in a pro-Palestine rally on October 8, 2023, stating that the candidate appeared to be "celebrating" the attacks that occurred the previous day. When asked by panelist Sunny Hostin if she was calling Avila Chevalier an antisemite, Haines responded, "Oh, yes. She would proudly call herself that, trust me."

Avila Chevalier, 32, has faced scrutiny for past social media posts, including one that panned former President Joe Biden as a "rapist" and another that stated "Israel doesn't exist." A September 2019 post also framed white women in interracial relationships as "ugly colonizers." These posts have since been deleted. Additionally, Avila Chevalier has advocated for the abolishment of ICE, stating in June that "all deportations are wrong," and supports the "Defund the Police" movement and "seizing property from landlords," according to a recent New York Times report. A City and State profile has suggested Avila Chevalier could be "the next AOC."

Mayor's Endorsements and Show's Precedents

Mamdani has endorsed Avila Chevalier and two other progressive candidates in New York, all of whom won their primary elections. The mayor himself appeared on "The View" in January.

According to Semafor, "The View" has not hosted a political candidate from a competitive midterm race in nearly six months, since Texas Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico appeared. That appearance led to scrutiny from the FCC and a revival of the "equal time rule," a regulation designed to ensure broadcast stations provide equal time to opposing political candidates. FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr had initiated an inquiry in February to determine if "The View" should continue to receive exemptions from these stipulations. ABC's legal team has argued in a filing that the show is being singled out due to perceived disfavor from the Trump Administration. This ongoing inquiry has reportedly made showrunners more cautious about booking guests.
