New York Islanders forward Matthew Schaefer has indicated his intention to live with the family of former Islander and current executive Matt Martin once again for the upcoming NHL season. Schaefer, 19, made the informal announcement during the Islanders' golf outing at the Glen Oaks Club.

"I don't know if they want me back, but I'm going back," Schaefer stated when asked about his living arrangements. "I mean, I kept my stuff there and then I'm like, I'm coming back. I guess they can't say no. I think they want me out probably sooner, but you know what? I'm like, 'Hey, I'm planting my seed here and I'm staying here.'"

Despite Schaefer's lighthearted assertion that the Martins might prefer him to move out, it is evident the arrangement has been mutually beneficial. Matt Martin, who played 14 seasons with the Islanders before transitioning to an executive role, welcomed Schaefer into his home last season. The young player quickly formed a strong connection with the Martin family, including their two daughters, Winnie and Alice.

Sydney Martin, Matt Martin's wife, has frequently shared moments on social media depicting Schaefer's interactions with their children, highlighting the significant bond he has developed with them. Earlier in September, she posted a photo of Schaefer celebrating his 19th birthday with the family.

In an interview on SiriusXM last month, Matt Martin spoke positively about Schaefer's presence in their household. "From the moment he kind of stepped in our house and met our family, before it was ever decided he was going to live with us, you just feel the type of kid he is, the type of energy he has," Martin said. "Kind of gravitated towards our kids and our kids gravitated towards him. It's a really special thing for my kids."

Schaefer is entering his second NHL season following a standout rookie campaign where he earned the Calder Trophy as the league's top rookie. He recorded 23 goals and 59 points in all 82 games during the 2025-26 season.
