Actor Matthew Rhys has stated he was too intimidated to speak with Harrison Ford about his experience voicing the iconic character Han Solo. Rhys, who is from Cardiff, Wales, took on the role for a Welsh-language adaptation of the Star Wars universe. He described the experience as "surreal" and acknowledged the difficulty of stepping into such a well-known character's shoes.
"I can't voice Harrison Ford!" Rhys said, expressing his trepidation. He confirmed that he never approached Ford to discuss the role, citing his fear as the primary reason. "No. I'm too scared," he stated.
Rhys also reflected on his Welsh idols in Hollywood, mentioning David Niven and Richard Burton as inspirations. He admired Niven's self-assuredness and grace, recalling an instance at the Oscars. "I just wish I could be that person, and be gracious and effortless," Rhys commented.
He placed Richard Burton, also from Wales, on a similar level of inspiration. Rhys found Burton's journey from obscurity to global fame particularly compelling. "Because he was the first to be very, very un-Welsh, which was arresting and inspiring," Rhys explained, referring to Burton's rise as a departure from traditional perceptions and an indication that breaking out of perceived limitations was possible.
Looking ahead, the Emmy Award-winner expressed that an "next echelon" Oscar win still holds appeal for him.
