Matthew McConaughey, known for his Oscar-winning performance in "Dallas Buyers Club" and roles in films such as "Interstellar," has revealed that his 2003 romantic comedy "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days" is his most significant source of residual income. The film, in which he starred opposite Kate Hudson, continues to be his biggest money-maker, significantly outperforming his more critically acclaimed projects.
"It still pays the best mailbox money of any film I've ever done. By far. By lengths," McConaughey stated in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. He noted that prior to the prevalence of streaming, he would receive a substantial check each March, largely due to the film's popularity around Valentine's Day.
McConaughey, who has over 40 feature film roles since the early 1990s, considers "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days" a personal favorite from his romantic comedy era, which included "The Wedding Planner" and "Failure to Launch." He described the film as "a real anchor in the rom-com genre through time."
Regarding his on-screen chemistry with co-star Kate Hudson, McConaughey recalled their initial meeting on the Paramount lot. He explained that instead of reading lines, they engaged in playful banter, which immediately established a comfortable rapport. "There was a bit of rock and roll exchange, like, 'Oh, this could be some heavyweight fun,'" he said, believing this chemistry was key to his casting and the film's success.
Hudson echoed similar sentiments in a March 2025 interview with Vanity Fair, calling her experience filming "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days" amazing. She described her connection with McConaughey as a shared "joie de vivre," characterized by energy, competitiveness, and flirtatiousness, which she felt allowed them to connect effectively onscreen. Hudson referred to McConaughey as one of the "great loves" in her filmography, expressing gratitude for their collaboration.
