Oscar-winning actor Matthew McConaughey has once again fueled speculation about a potential move into politics following a recent encounter with Pope Francis.

McConaughey met the pontiff during the Pope's weekly general audience at St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City on August 5, accompanied by his wife, Camila Alves McConaughey. The experience left a significant impression on the actor, who described the Pope as a figure capable of representing "the moral compass of the world."

Speaking on "The Tonight Show," McConaughey compared preparing for the audience with the Pope to preparing for the Academy Awards, noting that genuine interaction often goes beyond planned remarks. He highlighted the Pope's sense of humor, stating that "the holiest and most spiritual people in the world; they've all got a great sense of humor."

McConaughey expressed a belief in the convergence of secular and spiritual values, suggesting that while church and state should remain separate, the underlying values should inform political systems. "There's still a constitution out there to be written that all religions could agree on," he remarked. "There's so much commonality. It's a constitution that I'm excited about seeing – I don't know, maybe even adding to or working on."

This sentiment comes amid ongoing speculation about McConaughey's political ambitions. He was previously considered a potential candidate for Governor of Texas in 2022 but did not pursue office. The actor has consistently described his political stance as "aggressively centric" and has often advocated for finding common ground between Democrats and Republicans.

His past public statements have touched upon a range of issues, including support for stronger gun regulations alongside Second Amendment rights. He has also critiqued "cancel culture" and perceived intolerance in Hollywood, while rejecting calls to defund the police and expressing support for traditional values and religion.

Previously, McConaughey indicated he would not seriously consider a political career until his children were grown. Ahead of his Vatican trip, he shared his interest in discussing the role of religion in contemporary society, particularly the apparent resurgence of faith among young people. He suggested that many young individuals are "looking for some structure; they're trying to get more than what the world around them has given them."

McConaughey also raised concerns about the influence of artificial intelligence, questioning the values that will guide its development and warning against allowing technology to dictate human values. "We may not like what we see when we look in the mirror, but we could also love what we see... So there's great upside and I'm excited about it," he said, while also cautioning, "At the same time, there's a definite need for caution going forward because we're going to have to be the users of that tool and not let it tool us."

Last year, McConaughey published "Poems & Prayers," a collection reflecting his spiritual perspective.
