The New Bedford Whaling Museum, located on Massachusetts' south shore, has found viral success by transforming a dismissive one-star Google review from 2020 into a line of popular merchandise. The review, which called the museum the "worst aquarium ever," has been embraced by the historical institution, which focuses on the history of marine trade in New England.

The museum's strategy involved creating memes based on the negative review, which gained traction online. This month, they launched hoodies, t-shirts, and tote bags featuring the "worst aquarium ever" slogan, a one-star graphic, and an illustration of a whale skeleton. Annelise Conway, the museum's Chief Engagement Officer, stated that since the museum does not house live whales, it accurately fits the description of "the worst aquarium ever."

The merchandise, particularly the hoodies, has garnered significant attention, appearing on local news and in TikTok videos. The museum has also playfully highlighted this campaign, with an employee reportedly wearing the "worst aquarium ever" hoodie to an actual local aquarium.

Established in 1903, the New Bedford Whaling Museum explores the history of marine life in New England, the economic impact of early American ship towns, and the historical practice of commercial whaling. The museum's exhibits include whaling artifacts such as scrimshaw and harpoons, and it also provides exhibition space for local artists.

Throughout its history, commercial whaling significantly impacted whale populations, with estimates suggesting over 90% of ocean whales were decimated. This practice was a substantial part of the 19th-century American economy, a period famously depicted in Herman Melville's 1851 novel "Moby Dick."

Today, the museum also focuses on the contemporary role of whales in the ecosystem. Annually, in January, it hosts a Moby Dick Marathon, featuring 24-hour readings of the novel, along with performances, art installations, and refreshments. Despite its exhibits, the museum does not have any living whales.

The "worst aquarium ever" hoodies are available online in sizes small to 2XL for $60, though some sizes have already sold out.
