Last Ditch Bar, a lesbian bar in Greenfield, Massachusetts, announced it will close by winter, citing immediate cessation of operations except for booked events. The closure follows a controversy sparked by the bar's decision to make masks optional on Saturday nights, a move that generated significant backlash.
The bar, which had maintained a strict mask mandate on all other days, initially announced the change in August as a way to boost business. The decision was met with strong criticism from some members of the queer community who accused the establishment of endangering immunocompromised individuals. Social media comments included accusations of complicity in a "mass disabling event" and harsh criticisms of the bar's business practices.
Last Ditch Bar, founded by three housemates in 2025, had also implemented a business model that welcomed patrons regardless of their ability to pay, stating, "Nobody will be barred from entry due to lack of funds" and "Poor and unhoused people are welcome in the space." This model, combined with the mask policy, reportedly led to declining sales.
During a community meeting on September 11, the bar's remaining owner, Jackie Matellian, reportedly expressed the difficulties of running the establishment, including personal financial burdens. In a social media post announcing the closure, Last Ditch Bar stated, "We have put our lives on hold to foster networks of care, resources, and a home base for organizing. It's time we pass it on." The bar is seeking new owners or a full sale.
