Michael Marra and Joe Fagan will compete to become the next leader of the Scottish Labour Party. The contest was triggered last month when Anas Sarwar announced he would be stepping down to join Andy Burnham's government.
Marra stated he was humbled to be on the ballot and anticipated a "good spirited and comradely contest." He emphasized the significant task ahead for the new leader, which includes uniting the party, rediscovering its core values, and reconnecting with Scotland. "I am the candidate who can do that," Marra asserted. He also offered commiserations to Monica Lennon, whom he described as "one of the most formidable and effective campaigners the Labour movement has."
Fagan articulated that the leadership campaign is about more than assessing past shortcomings. "It is about what Labour does next," he said. "It is about respecting work, backing our communities and giving working people real power over the future, not asking them simply to live with decisions made elsewhere."
