Authorities have launched a manhunt for a suspect involved in a severe road rage incident that left a 61-year-old man hospitalized in Victoria. The alleged assault occurred on Saturday around noon on Melton Highway near Sydenham.
According to police reports, the victim was driving through roadworks when another driver allegedly rammed his car three times. After both vehicles pulled over, the driver of the second vehicle reportedly exited his car armed with a golf club. The suspect then allegedly struck the victim on the leg and smashed his car's windscreen. The 61-year-old man was taken to a local hospital with significant bruising, and his vehicle was deemed undriveable.
Police have released images of a man believed to be the suspect, who was seen inside a gold-coloured Nissan Patrol. The individual is described as being approximately 180 cm tall, heavy-set, and of Pacific Islander appearance. At the time of the incident, he was reportedly wearing a red long-sleeved top, dark shorts, and thongs.
Authorities are appealing to the public for assistance and are urging anyone who witnessed the incident or has information to contact Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000.
This incident follows another notable road rage event in Melbourne less than two weeks prior. In that case, a driver in a Hyundai was reportedly accosted by a group of motorcyclists after a near-miss. Footage from the earlier incident showed approximately a dozen riders attempting to enter the vehicle after the driver pulled over on Melbourne Road. The car in that instance was also written off. Police subsequently arrested two teenagers in connection with the earlier incident, charging them with offenses including reckless conduct endangering serious injury and affray. Both have since been bailed and are awaiting court proceedings.
