A Reddit user has gained widespread attention after sharing an exchange with their manager who responded with a blunt refusal when the employee called in sick with gastrointestinal illness. The employee stated they were unsure if they could work the following day after experiencing symptoms.

In response, the manager replied, "No way." The manager further insisted the employee should have provided a week's notice, adding, "You are the one who picked the shift."

Following the initial exchange, the manager sent a message to all staff emphasizing the expectation to work scheduled shifts and expressing frustration with absences. "As I have told everyone hundreds of times, you need to do your rostered shift as per contract and update your availability every week," the manager wrote in the all-staff message.

Gastroenteritis, commonly known as gastro, is a highly contagious illness that can cause symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea. This illness can spread rapidly in a workplace setting.

The screenshots of the exchange quickly generated significant online reaction, with many users expressing outrage at the manager's approach. Comments highlighted concerns about sympathy, employment laws, and the potential for spreading illness. "Sick leave is advised, not requested. You don't have to ask for permission. You are just sick," one user commented. Another pointed out the contagious nature of the illness, stating, "Do they realise how highly contagious it is and how no one will be showing up to work for a day if you do?"
