A 22-year-old man was shot in the neck and upper back early Saturday when gunfire erupted in front of a Bronx community center, police said.
The shooting occurred around 7 a.m. on Rosedale Avenue in the Soundview neighborhood, in front of the Justice Sonia Sotomayor Community Center, according to law enforcement sources. Three gunshots struck a black SUV; bullets tore through the passenger-side window and hit the man who was seated inside at least twice. He was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital in stable condition.
A 25-year-old man who was driving the SUV transported the wounded passenger to the hospital and later called 911 to report the shooting, police sources said. Neither the driver nor the injured man gave officers a description of a suspect or said in which direction the shooter fled. ShotSpotter sensors recorded three gunshots at the scene, the sources added.
Police said the driver did not remain at the scene to speak with investigators. There were no immediate arrests or charges in the case as authorities continued to collect evidence and review surveillance footage.
The attack is the latest violent incident in the borough, which police sources described as following a bloody August. Investigators have canvassed the area and interviewed potential witnesses, while detectives from the NYPD’s homicide and crime scene units were expected to process the location further.
Community centers in the Bronx serve as local hubs for residents, and shootings near such facilities typically prompt increased patrols and outreach from precinct commanders. Police encouraged anyone with information to contact NYPD detectives or Crime Stoppers.
No additional details about the victim’s condition were released beyond his hospitalization in stable condition. Authorities asked that anyone with video or other evidence from the Rosedale Avenue area from the early-morning hours contact the NYPD as the investigation continues.
