Two Police Scotland officers sustained serious injuries on July 25 when a man reversed a van over them before fleeing the scene. The incident occurred around 2 p.m. on Glen Avenue in Larkhall, South Lanarkshire, as the officers were conducting inquiries at a property. Video footage captured by a resident shows the man running to a white Renault Trafic van. As the two officers, aged 43 and 41, approached to open the driver's door, the man reversed the vehicle over them and drove away.
Residents rushed to assist the officers, who were lying on the ground. Both were transported to a hospital with serious injuries. The 41-year-old officer has since been released, while the 43-year-old remains in stable condition. No other injuries were reported.
The van involved in the incident was later found in Kirkstyle Place in Glassford. Police Scotland has launched an investigation into the event, describing it as a "deliberate and despicable attack."
Detective Inspector Gary Smillie appealed for witnesses who were in the area around the time of the incident to come forward, as well as anyone with dashcam or private CCTV footage that might assist the investigation. Chief Inspector Paul Doyle stated that violence against officers is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. He reassured the community that efforts are underway to apprehend the suspect and that increased patrols are present in the local area.
