A 41-year-old man sustained head injuries and was hospitalized following an alleged one-punch attack in the Sydney beachside suburb of Coogee on Saturday night. Emergency services responded to reports of an assault around 11 p.m. on Coogee Bay Road.
CCTV footage captured the moment two men, who had been seen talking and embracing after leaving a nearby venue, became involved in a physical altercation. The video shows one man slapping and punching the other, who then fell to the ground unconscious.
Bystanders intervened to assist the injured man, with one woman heard calling for an ambulance. Other bystanders rolled the unconscious man onto his side, and the woman pushed away the man who allegedly delivered the punch.
The alleged attacker, identified as 26-year-old Rangi Moore, was arrested at the scene. He was subsequently charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and spent the night in custody.
Moore appeared in court on Sunday, where his legal representation argued that he acted in self-defense. He was granted bail under strict conditions, including a curfew and a ban on using drugs or alcohol. Moore is scheduled to reappear in court at a later date.
The victim was transported to Prince of Wales Hospital, where he remains in a stable condition.
