Leicestershire Police have launched a murder investigation following the death of a man who was fatally stabbed in the city center on Wednesday night. The incident occurred around 10:45 p.m. BST when an officer in a police car was flagged down on London Road, near Saxby Street. The man, who was in his 20s, presented with significant injuries to his chest and stomach. He was transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries in the early hours of Thursday morning.
Detectives believe the stabbing may have occurred minutes before the victim was able to flag down the police car. Initial inquiries suggest the assault took place in De Montfort Place, an area to the rear of properties along London Road. At present, no arrests have been made.
Police have established a scene preservation at the suspected location to facilitate a forensic examination. Authorities are appealing to the public for assistance, specifically requesting anyone who was in the vicinity of London Road between 10:45 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. on Wednesday to come forward. This includes individuals who may possess dashcam footage from the time of the incident.
Det Insp Lorna Granville, of the East Midlands Special Operations Unit Major Crime Team, stated that the investigation is in its preliminary stages. "We are currently working to establish the full circumstances and identify those who may have been involved," Granville said. The force is actively pursuing several lines of inquiry to piece together the events leading up to the fatal stabbing.
