Police are investigating the death of a 79-year-old man in Melbourne's south-east, with the incident reportedly stemming from a dispute involving allegations of an affair with the wife of his alleged killer.
The man, identified as Peter Duss, was found deceased by police inside his home on Penrhyn Avenue in Croydon at approximately 2:10 a.m. on Monday. Officers responded to reports of a dispute at the residence.
A 57-year-old man has been arrested in connection with Duss's death. He was taken to a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries to his upper body and remains under police guard. He is expected to be interviewed by investigators soon.
Details indicate the dispute may have centered on an alleged romantic relationship between Mr. Duss and the wife of the 57-year-old suspect.
Detectives are continuing to gather evidence at the scene to determine the timeline of events and the nature of the relationship.
Friends of Mr. Duss expressed shock at his death. Gillian Bysher, a family friend, told 7News, "I am shocked. I am totally and utterly shocked. It doesn’t seem possible that this has happened to somebody I’ve known for many years."
Mr. Duss, a native of Germany, was a long-time resident of the area and had volunteered as a German language tutor at the University of the Third Age Croydon campus.
Neighbors described the incident as disturbing, with one, Peter Molloy, stating, "A lot of us have been living here for many years. Neighbors are very friendly."
