A 28-year-old man has been charged with the murder of Ann Widdecombe, a former Conservative Member of Parliament. Joshua Kerry, from South Yorkshire, is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Tuesday.
Laurence Taylor, head of UK Counter Terrorism Policing, stated that the investigation into Kerry, including his motivations and any wider activities, is ongoing and described it as a "particularly intensive and complex investigation." Counter-terrorism teams have reportedly gathered a significant amount of information, leading to over 800 lines of inquiry. The investigation is being led by Counter Terrorism Policing South East, with support from Devon and Cornwall Police. Investigators have indicated they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.
Frank Ferguson of the Crown Prosecution Service's special crime and counter-terrorism division confirmed that prosecutors have worked with police to establish sufficient evidence for the case to proceed to court. He reminded the public that legal proceedings are active and that the defendant is entitled to a fair trial, urging against any reporting or commentary that could prejudice the proceedings.
Ann Widdecombe served as the Conservative MP for Maidstone for 23 years and held ministerial positions under Prime Minister John Major in the 1990s. After leaving Parliament, she participated in popular television programs, including "Strictly Come Dancing" and "Celebrity Big Brother." She later represented South West England as a Member of the European Parliament for the Brexit Party and joined Reform UK as a party spokeswoman in 2023. Mourners gathered in Haytor Vale to remember the 78-year-old following her death.
