Police have arrested a 37-year-old man after a two-day standoff that concluded with officers hauling him off a roof where he was sleeping. The incident, which took place in Salford, saw riot police use a ladder to reach the man, who was on the roof of a back porch.
During the arrest, the man's trousers came down as he was pulled to the ground, eventually falling onto officers. Two officers sustained minor injuries during the struggle. Greater Manchester Police stated that the arrest was initiated by another force, as the man was wanted on recall to prison.
He was arrested on suspicion of causing public nuisance, criminal damage, public order offenses, burglary, and assaulting two police officers. The man is currently in police custody.
Detective Chief Inspector Helen Bagnall of Salford district commented on the situation, noting the extensive use of policing resources and the daily dangers officers face. "This was an extensive use of vital policing resources and clearly demonstrates the dangers our officers face on a daily basis in order to protect the people of Greater Manchester," Bagnall said. She also thanked the local community for their patience and understanding during the operation.
Damage occurred to some properties as a result of the man's actions, and police have stated they will work with partners to support affected residents. The arrest evoked comparisons to the catchphrase of Jack Regan, a character from the 1970s police drama
