Authorities in Jackson, Mississippi, have arrested a 51-year-old local man on a murder charge in connection with the death of Tasia Fortune, a 29-year-old Black mother of four who was found hanging from a tree in late August. The Mississippi State Medical Examiner’s Office officially classified Fortune’s death as a homicide, prompting swift action from the Jackson Police Department.

Jarques Ratliff, identified as a Jackson resident with a prior personal connection to Fortune, was taken into custody without incident on Saturday. Police Chief RaShall Brackney stated that the investigation remains active, with additional arrests anticipated as detectives pursue further leads. The arrest occurred after officers executed search warrants at properties related to the case.

Fortune's body was discovered on August 3 behind a vacant property. Investigators logged numerous hours interviewing witnesses and reviewing physical evidence before the homicide classification was handed down. Chief Brackney acknowledged the intense media scrutiny and public interest surrounding the case, particularly given Mississippi's history of racialized violence. She emphasized that law enforcement's actions are guided strictly by verifiable physical evidence and forensic facts, not by external speculation.

"We understand that this case has received media attention from across the globe and across the community. We understand the questions and the desire for answers given Mississippi's history," Brackney said. "We are taking them seriously. At the same time, we do have a responsibility to make sure that what we say publicly is supported by our evidence and the facts."

Brackney also refuted social media reports that a different individual had previously been identified as a suspect, stating that no persons of interest were officially designated prior to Ratliff's arrest.

Fortune's mother, Christy Spivey, confirmed that her family was notified of the homicide ruling and Ratliff's arrest. Spivey expressed gratitude for the police investigation and maintained her belief that her daughter did not die by suicide. According to family members, Fortune, who grew up in Kentucky, had relocated to Jackson a decade ago. While she had experienced homelessness in recent years, she was reportedly working to stabilize her life and launch a cleaning business.

Ratliff is currently being held at the Hinds County Detention Center. His initial court appearance is scheduled for Monday. Police have not yet publicly detailed the specific evidence linking Ratliff to the scene or elaborated on his exact relationship with Fortune, as the investigation continues.
