Police have revealed that a 28-year-old man arrested in connection with the alleged murder of former minister Ann Widdecombe is from Rotherham. Counter-terrorism officers were involved in the raid that led to his apprehension, but authorities have stated the attack was not politically motivated.
The former MP and MEP was discovered deceased by her gardener at her cottage in Haytor, Devon, on Thursday morning. Officers detained the 28-year-old white British man on Saturday, and he remains in custody. Police are continuing their investigation into the death.
Ann Widdecombe's body was found in the kitchen of her remote bungalow. Detectives believe she was attacked around 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 10, 2026, shortly before she was scheduled to appear on a television program. An ambulance crew alerted the police the following day, July 11, at approximately 11:40 a.m.
Police confirmed on Sunday, July 12, that a 28-year-old man was arrested at an address in the South Yorkshire area on suspicion of murder. The arrest was supported by Counter Terrorism Policing North East and South Yorkshire Police. While acknowledging the involvement of counter-terrorism units, Devon and Cornwall Police, who are leading the investigation, stated there is currently no information to suggest the incident is terrorism-related.
Authorities have confirmed they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the alleged murder. An earlier arrest of a 26-year-old man is no longer part of the investigation, as he was released without charge.
Ms. Widdecombe had spoken to a researcher for a television program by phone earlier on Wednesday to arrange an interview. Her last message to the researcher was received at 12:19 p.m. Subsequent attempts to contact her via messages and calls went unanswered, prompting concern from the show's research team. Her agent was contacted later on Wednesday, with further follow-ups on Thursday.
Concerns about a suspicious vehicle were also raised by a local garage manager. His colleague reportedly noticed a dark VW Golf parked in an unusual location near Ms. Widdecombe's home around 9 a.m. on Wednesday. The driver, described as a white male in his late 20s or early 30s, was seen preparing to walk in the direction of Ms. Widdecombe's house. Police reportedly requested CCTV footage of the vehicle, but it is understood none was available.
