Mallorca, a popular destination in Spain's Balearic Islands, is experiencing a notable increase in pickpocketing incidents, with tourists, particularly the elderly, being targeted near the capital, Palma. Viral videos circulating online appear to show individuals, often described as young, engaging in brazen theft from unsuspecting visitors in crowded areas like the vicinity of Palma Cathedral.
The island, which welcomed approximately 13.5 million visitors in 2025, is grappling with the challenges of overtourism. This influx of millions of travelers creates an environment where pickpockets can more easily operate, preying on those who may be distracted or unfamiliar with their surroundings.
Travel expert Angel Castellanos noted that criminals often target individuals who appear disoriented, laden with shopping bags, or less aware of their immediate environment. He added that intoxication in nightlife areas can also lower a traveler's situational awareness. Castellanos stated that the rebound in international tourism, surpassing pre-pandemic levels in many parts of Europe, contributes to the increased prevalence of such crimes.
Despite the rise in petty crime, experts emphasize that the solution is not to avoid popular destinations like Mallorca, but rather to adopt smarter travel habits. Castellanos, who has traveled extensively without experiencing theft, highlighted the importance of maintaining constant awareness of one's surroundings, especially in busy tourist hubs. He recommended practical measures such as using anti-theft bags, securing valuables in zippered front pockets, and refraining from placing phones on café tables.
"The takeaway isn't to avoid these places. It's to travel smarter," Castellanos advised. He also mentioned that a heightened sense of situational awareness can significantly reduce the risk of becoming a victim. While acknowledging the concerns raised by recent incidents, he reiterated that Mallorca remains a premier summer destination in Europe.
