Malibu, a celebrity enclave known for its luxury and scenic coastline, has been identified as one of California's most dangerous cities for July 4th celebrations, according to a new study by personal injury firm Maison Law. While Clearlake in Northern California was ranked the state's most dangerous city for the holiday, Malibu placed fourth, a position that may surprise many given its reputation.
The study analyzed 373 cities with populations over 10,000 across five key safety factors: holiday crash rates, injury death rates, a five-year crash average, county fire incident rates, and fireworks availability. The firm's findings indicate that Malibu's high ranking is largely attributed to alarming crash statistics.
Malibu reportedly experiences nearly 1,000 crash fatalities and injuries per 100,000 residents annually. Researchers suggest that heavy traffic along the Pacific Coast Highway, particularly during busy holiday weekends, may contribute to these figures.
Another affluent city, Beverly Hills, also appeared in the top 10, ranking tenth. The full list of the 10 most dangerous California cities for the Fourth of July includes Clearlake, Susanville, Red Bluff, Malibu, Signal Hill, Eureka, Oroville, Marysville, Modesto, and Beverly Hills.
Northern California communities, including Clearlake and Susanville, dominated the rankings due to a combination of higher traffic fatality rates and elevated fire incident rates. Martin Gasparian, founding attorney of Maison Law, noted that the Fourth of July presents a confluence of risks, such as increased instances of drinking and driving, late-night travel, fireworks, and fire dangers.
"The goal of this report is not to scare people away from celebrating, but to help Californians understand where risks are highest and make safer decisions before the holiday weekend," Gasparian stated.
Conversely, the study identified Hillsborough as the safest city in California for Independence Day celebrations, followed by Rancho Palos Verdes, Lomita, Moraga, and Clayton.
