Amy Tatlock, a 49-year-old grandmother and cancer survivor, was killed on Thursday when a tree branch fell through the windshield of her car during a severe storm in Corinth, Maine. The incident occurred around 1:15 p.m. in the town northwest of Bangor.
Tatlock was driving when lightning struck a nearby tree, causing a large branch to break off and strike her vehicle. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Two of her grandchildren were in the car at the time of the accident. One grandchild, in the front seat, sustained minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital for evaluation, while the other, in the backseat, was unharmed.
A passing driver witnessed the event and took action to safely stop the vehicle after the impact, actions that officials believe likely prevented further injuries to the children.
Tatlock, who had recently overcome cancer in October of the previous year, is survived by her husband, three children, and three grandchildren. Her son, Christian Tatlock, described her as an exceptionally strong and giving person. Her husband, Andrew Tatlock, expressed profound grief and disbelief at her sudden death.
Tatlock was known for her volunteer work, including serving as a bus driver for a local school and leading a Girl Scout troop for over two decades. In 2019, she was recognized for her efforts to make her home more accessible for her daughter who has muscular dystrophy.
Her oldest daughter, Michaela Tatlock, organized a GoFundMe campaign to help with funeral expenses, noting that the family did not have life insurance. The fundraiser significantly exceeded its initial goal, raising over $16,000 through donations from those offering condolences and support to the family. The family has asked to remember Tatlock for her kindness, selflessness, and courage.
