A Maine couple on a fishing trip intervened when they witnessed a black bear chasing a moose calf, using their truck to drive between the animals and deter the predator. Elvia and Todd Malcolm were in Telos Township when they observed a female moose and her calf.
According to Todd Malcolm, the mother moose appeared agitated before the calf and a black bear suddenly charged out of the woods toward them. Reacting quickly, Malcolm drove his truck between the bear and the calf. The bear veered off into the woods.
"I knew what I had to do and I just did it," Todd Malcolm stated. He emphasized that his intention was not to harm the bear but to separate it from the calf.
Elvia Malcolm described her heart racing during the encounter, relieved that the bear did not catch the calf. She observed the calf reunite with its mother shortly after the bear retreated. Elvia Malcolm captured photographs of the chase from inside the truck.
The couple then continued on to their fishing destination after ensuring the calf was safely reunited with its mother.
