A Maine couple on their way to a fishing trip unexpectedly encountered a black bear pursuing a young moose calf and intervened by using their truck to scare off the predator.
Elvia and Todd Malcolm were traveling in Telos Township, in northern Maine, when they observed a female moose near a wooded area. The mother moose appeared agitated and was vocalizing, seemingly calling for her calf. Shortly thereafter, the calf emerged from the trees with a black bear in close pursuit, heading directly toward the couple's vehicle.
Todd Malcolm stated that he believed the bear would catch the calf if no action was taken. He then drove the truck forward, positioning it between the bear and the calf without intending to harm the animal. The bear veered away and disappeared into the woods.
Elvia Malcolm expressed relief that they were able to help the calf. She noted that after the bear abandoned the chase, she saw the mother moose and calf reunited and safe. She captured photographs of the incident through the truck's front windshield.
Following the encounter, the Malcolms proceeded to their intended fishing destination, where they caught brook trout.
