Madonna has spoken about a past strain in her relationship with her daughter, Lourdes Leon, explaining that Leon held onto "resentment" and was initially worked with her in a "standoffish" manner on a song for Madonna's upcoming album, "Confessions II." The Queen of Pop, 67, shared these details during an appearance on Graham Norton's BBC show, "Madonna & Graham."
Madonna, who shares Lourdes with ex-partner Carlos Leon, stated that her daughter did not want to be perceived as benefiting from her mother's fame. "She doesn't want to be perceived as my daughter, taking advantage of her privilege," Madonna said. Leon's approach to songwriting was described as being at her own pace, which Madonna respects, adding that her daughter is a talented songwriter with a superior singing voice. "She's a great songwriter and has a much better voice than I do," Madonna commented.
The collaboration on the song eventually led to a healing experience for the mother and daughter. Leon approached Madonna, expressing that she realized she had been holding onto something, which Madonna identified as "anger" or "resentment." Leon suggested they write a song together as a way to process these feelings, with each expressing their own perspectives. "Let's write a song together, I think it will be a very healing experience. You say exactly what you want to say and I will say exactly what I want to say," Leon reportedly proposed.
Madonna recalled her happiness at the suggestion, stating, "I was so happy. Her lyrics are beautiful."
This isn't the first time the mother-daughter relationship has been discussed publicly. In a 2021 interview with Interview magazine, Lourdes Leon described her mother as a "control freak" and mentioned paying for her own college tuition and first apartment to gain independence. "My mom is such a control freak, and she has controlled me my whole life. I needed to be completely independent from her as soon as I graduated high school," Leon said at the time.
In contrast, a 2019 Vogue interview quoted Madonna praising her daughter as "insanely talented" but noting a perceived lack of drive compared to her own career trajectory. Lourdes Leon has since pursued a career in modeling and music.
Family Trauma and Album Inspiration
Mádonna's new album, "Confessions II," is also influenced by "family trauma," including the death of her brother Christopher. Christopher Ciccone, who previously worked as his sister's backup dancer, dresser, and art director, passed away in 2024 at the age of 63 after battling cancer. Madonna described their bond as profound, stemming from a shared understanding of being "different" and facing societal challenges.
However, their relationship fractured in the late 1990s, with Christopher reportedly growing resentful over sacrificing his own artistic ambitions to support Madonna's career. He publicly criticized Madonna in 2000, calling her an "evil queen" in a leaked email and lamenting his perceived lack of respect from her. Later, he co-wrote a tell-all book about their relationship, which included critical remarks about his sister.
"Confessions II" is scheduled for release on July 3 through Warner Records.
