The Hurlingham Club, a private members' establishment favored by the British Royal Family, has drawn ire from its members for a temporary closure to host an event for French luxury fashion brand Hermès. This marks the first time in the club's history that it has closed its facilities for such a purpose.
Members expressed frustration over being denied access to the club's grounds, with some reporting that preparations for the Hermès event disrupted their ability to use certain areas, including the river walk and deckchair areas by the croquet lawn. One member described the situation as "appalling," stating that the club had "stooped to accepting money from a brand – a French one at that – and forgetting about the value of the members."
The event, a "very British Garden Party" to celebrate the opening of Maison Hermès' new Bond Street store, drew a number of celebrities including actress Jenna Coleman, tennis commentator Annabel Croft, musician Sir Bob Geldof, and supermodel Erin O'Connor. Pianist Jools Holland and DJ Fat Boy Slim provided entertainment for the guests, which also included Emma Thynn, Marchioness of Bath, and Lady Martha Sitwell.
In addition to the event closure, members have also voiced discontent regarding the demolition of two tennis courts to make way for padel courts. Some members believe padel will be a fleeting trend and consider the conversion a "total waste." The Hurlingham Club was contacted for comment regarding the recent events and member feedback.
