Luigi Mangione is scheduled to appear in a Manhattan courtroom on Tuesday for a hearing that may be his final proceeding before jury selection commences for his murder trial next month.
Mangione, 28, is accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. The hearing will take place in person at Manhattan Supreme Court.
This appearance comes a week after Mangione requested that his murder trial be livestreamed, a departure from New York's general prohibition on broadcasting criminal trials. He argued that an "overflow" feed within the courthouse should be available to allow journalists and the public to follow the proceedings live, given increased media attention. Justice Gregory Carro has not yet ruled on the request for an overflow room.
Jury selection for Mangione's state murder trial is slated to begin on September 8. He is also facing a separate federal case.
Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, was fatally shot on a Midtown sidewalk in December 2024. Prosecutors have described the killing as a targeted execution. Mangione, who has a background from a preparatory school and an Ivy League university, has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The state court system has utilized overflow rooms for high-profile trials previously. Most recently, such a room was used during the trial of former President Donald Trump concerning hush-money payments, which occurred in the same courthouse.
Mangione supporters, including Ashley Rojas, Abril Rios, and Lena Weissbrot, were present outside the Manhattan courthouse on May 18, 2026, with press credentials and pins supporting Mangione.
