Luigi Mangione, 28, is expected to plead guilty Friday to federal charges in connection with the December 2024 murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, sources confirmed.

Mangione is scheduled to appear for a hearing in Manhattan federal court. He faces two counts of stalking resulting in death in the federal case. If he pleads guilty, Mangione could still face a potential life sentence.

A federal plea agreement could significantly affect a separate state case, where a trial is slated to begin on September 8. New York's rules against double jeopardy, which prevent an individual from being tried twice for the same crime, could be invoked.

The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, which has asserted primary jurisdiction over the case after initially charging Mangione with murder, could still proceed to trial if it disagrees with the terms of any proposed federal plea deal.
