England defender Lucy Bronze has signed a contract extension with Chelsea, citing a "really good role" and comfort within the club. The decision comes after a period filled with activities beyond her playing schedule, including a trip to Bogota, Colombia, where she engaged with refugees.
During her visit to Bogota, Bronze spent a day with refugees, an experience that left a significant impression. She described meeting a young girl who played soccer with boys on a difficult pitch amidst city life. Bronze was able to give the girl a shirt belonging to U.S. Women's National Team captain Naomi Girma, sharing pictures of Girma wearing it and noting that Girma's parents were also refugees. Bronze expressed a feeling of not having done enough during her visit, stating, "I felt like I didn't give enough."
Bronze intends to return to South America next summer, contingent on England qualifying for the Women's World Cup, which will be hosted by Brazil. This goal is a major priority for her this season. Having been on the losing side in the 2023 final against Spain, the 34-year-old defender has ascended to third on the all-time appearances list for the Lionesses. "Everybody knows that playing for England means the world to me," Bronze said. "Every experience I've had at the World Cup has just been phenomenal – it's been the best moments of my career. I just want to win it with England."
