A small dog, missing for nearly two weeks, was found struggling in the marsh near Cooley Landing Park in East Palo Alto on Thursday, having survived a harrowing ordeal that included battling rough waters and fending off seagulls.

The dog had vanished on the Fourth of July and was spotted swimming a half-mile off shore. The East Palo Alto Police Department documented the rescue, humorously noting that the day's drama was handled by the canine and the fire department.

Rescue Operation

The saga began when a witness reported seeing the dog run into the water and swim away from shore, prompting a 911 call. Officers responded to the scene at 3:26 p.m., and crews from the Menlo Park Fire Protection District initiated a search.

Firefighters used binoculars to locate the animal and subsequently employed a drone to pinpoint its exact position. Aerial footage captured the exhausted pup paddling in the bay while seagulls swooped overhead. The dog had managed to swim approximately half a mile from shore before rescuers could reach it.

A crew aboard Menlo Fire’s Airboat 77 successfully retrieved the pup from the water. It was then wrapped in a firefighter's coat for warmth and safety.

Aftermath and Reunion

Upon returning the dog to shore, rescuers discovered an open wound on its left cheek, consistent with a seagull strike. The animal was then placed under the care of animal control and later transferred to the Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA. Staff at the shelter were able to identify the owners and facilitate a reunion with their pet.

The multi-agency effort involved the Menlo Park Fire Protection District, East Palo Alto Police Department, Redwood City Fire Department, and the Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA. The dog's remarkable survival story garnered widespread admiration online.
