A Los Angeles mother has given birth to triplets who narrowly missed setting a world record for their combined weight. Nyla Craft delivered Elio, Elias, and Enzo on August 18, with the three boys collectively weighing 19.3 pounds. This total fell just shy of the current Guinness World Record for the heaviest triplets at birth, which is 22 pounds, 12.06 ounces.
Two of the newborns are identical twins. All three babies were born on their father Marco Bernal's birthday, and each weighed six pounds at birth. The family, now a total of seven, includes two older siblings for the newborns.
"When I heard the first baby come out, I cried because I was just, ‘oh my gosh … he’s okay,’ then the second one then the third one, and I was just like, I heard them all crying at once, and I was like, ‘oh thank God, they are good,'" Craft told CBS LA.
Bernal expressed his joy, stating, "We’re just so happy. This is the best part, seeing them out and sitting with the family and this is the reason we do what we do."
The Guinness World Record for the heaviest birth overall was set in 1879 by Anna Haining Bates, who gave birth to a single baby weighing 22 pounds. The record for the heaviest triplets at birth is held by Evan Patrick, Aiden Cole, and Lilly Kathryn from Englewood, Colorado, born in July 2003.
Dr. Rohit Passi, chief of neonatology at Kaiser Permanente South Bay Medical Center, also shared his happiness for the family.
