Billionaire businessman Lord Alan Sugar has expressed strong dissatisfaction with American Express after the company denied his request for a credit limit increase. The 79-year-old entrepreneur took to X, formerly Twitter, to share his experience, calling the bank "a bunch of idiots."
Lord Sugar detailed his interaction with the bank, stating he spent an hour on the phone and was transferred to four different people before speaking with someone in the UK who was aware of his financial standing. Despite this, his request was reportedly refused due to the bank's system.
His public complaint drew a mixed reaction online. Some users criticized him for "moaning" and appearing to expect preferential treatment, with one commenter suggesting it was hypocritical to champion his humble background while flaunting his wealth. Another user questioned why a billionaire would need a credit card, to which Lord Sugar replied that he does not carry large amounts of cash and requires a credit card for purchases.
Lord Sugar, estimated to be worth £1.3 billion, rose from a council estate in East London to become a prominent figure in business. He founded the electronics company Amstrad at age 21 and later achieved significant financial success. His business interests have included property investment and a past stake in Tottenham Hotspur. He has also been the host of the television show "The Apprentice" since its debut in 2005.
