The Log Cabin Republicans (LCR), a leading conservative advocacy group for LGBTQ+ individuals, has announced a strategic shift to focus exclusively on issues affecting lesbian, gay, and bisexual people. The organization cited a perceived radicalization within the transgender rights movement as the reason for its decision to remove the "T" from its LGBT advocacy, returning to its original mission.
In an op-ed published by Townhall.com, LCR President Ross Hemminger stated that the organization's board of directors voted to refine its national advocacy focus to concentrate specifically on issues of sexual orientation and conservative values. Hemminger explained that the group initially added transgender advocacy under its umbrella in 2015 but has now reversed that decision.
"We did not believe that we would find ourselves where we are today," Hemminger wrote. He characterized the current transgender movement as focusing heavily on minors, pushing what he described as "radical gender ideology" in schools, advocating for biological males in women's sports, and supporting gender reassignment treatments for minors, sometimes without parental consent.
Hemminger suggested that a decline in public support for the gay community and its rights, including marriage equality, may be linked to public perception being shaped by current transgender activists. He argued that younger generations, who may not have witnessed the decades-long fight for gay rights, are forming their views based on contemporary debates surrounding transgender issues.
"That is why, after significant discussion with our membership, our Board of Directors voted to refine Log Cabin Republicans’ national advocacy focus to concentrate specifically on issues of sexual orientation and conservative values — in other words, we are an LGB advocacy organization, as our founders envisioned and as our moral center calls us to be," Hemminger stated. The organization maintains that its membership remains open to all conservatives and allies aligned with its mission.
LCR's advocacy, Hemminger emphasized, will continue to be grounded in constitutional principles such as equal protection, limited government, and individual freedom. Issues such as marriage, adoption, military service, nondiscrimination, and religious liberty protections, he argued, align with the Republican Party's core tenets and are areas where the organization can achieve success. The group's founders established LCR with the conviction that gay Americans who believe in limited government, individual liberty, and equality deserve equal protection under the law and a voice within the Republican Party.
