Security guards on the set of the upcoming Batman film, 'The Batman: Part II,' are reportedly encountering an unusual challenge: locals attempting to sneak cans of the popular Scottish soft drink Irn Bru into the movie's scenes. The distinctive orange beverage has been found "popping up" in various set locations, including hot dog stalls and American-style trash cans, as Glasgow is transformed into Gotham City.
A social media post from a video editor, which has garnered over 400,000 views, detailed this security measure. According to the post, guards are required to sweep the set each night to clear it of the ubiquitous Irn Bru cans. This effort aims to prevent unintentional product placement in the highly anticipated film.
"The Batman: Part II," directed by Matt Reeves, stars Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne/Batman. The cast also includes Colin Farrell as The Penguin, Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon, and Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth. The film is scheduled for release in early 2028.
This situation echoes past incidents where products have inadvertently appeared in major film franchises. Notably, a Starbucks cup was visible in the final season of "Game of Thrones." Security teams in Glasgow also faced similar issues last summer during the filming of "Spider-Man: Brand New Day," when set and shop signs created for the movie were reportedly stolen.
Filming for "The Batman: Part II" has involved extensive set dressing in Glasgow's city center. Streets have been covered in artificial snow to depict Gotham during Christmas, and local businesses have been converted into fictional establishments. Police vehicles and Batmobiles have also been spotted filming chase sequences.
The makers of Irn Bru, AG Barr, humorously responded to the reports. A spokesperson stated, "We’ve always had our suspicions that BRUce Wayne was made from girders. If he needs a can to keep him going while saving Gotham, Glasgow’s clearly got him covered. Just stick up the Bat signal and we'll make sure there's some IRN-BRU for his utility belt."
The previous installment, "The Batman," released in 2022, achieved a global box office revenue exceeding $772 million.
