Local politicians in Mildenhall, UK, are seeking assurances about the security measures in place at a Ukrainian drone manufacturing plant in the area, citing concerns amplified by Russia's ongoing aggression.
Mildenhall Town Council's Mayor Russell Leaman stated that the possibility of retaliatory actions from a state like Russia, coupled with the presence of a large drone factory, is a cause for concern among some residents. "Day-to-day, I don't think it will affect too many people, but obviously there are some people that are anxious and worry," Leaman said. He noted that the town council had not been contacted by authorities to offer reassurance.
Andy Neal, a councilor representing the West Suffolk ward where the factory is located, questioned the decision to publicize the factory's location. Neal, who is part of the West Suffolk Independent group, suggested that the factory's proximity to RAF Mildenhall, a base for the U.S. Air Force (USAF) refuelling wing, might deter an aerial attack. However, he posited that sabotage could still be a threat to the approximately 500 jobs the Ministry of Defence (MoD) said would be created.
A spokesperson for the USAF stated that U.S. Air Forces in Europe remain vigilant and committed to the safety of airmen, families, mission partners, and surrounding communities. "We continue to work closely with our local law enforcement partners to ensure security measures are maintained."
The MoD acknowledged that commenting on specific security procedures could benefit potential adversaries but asserted that the security of defense assets is a top priority. "The first duty of government is national security. We take the security of our people, sites and local communities extremely seriously, and we continually review and strengthen our security arrangements," an MoD statement read. "The public should be reassured that the UK and its allies remain vigilant against potential threats. We will not comment on specific security measures, but Russia should be in no doubt about the resolve of this government to stand against Russian aggression, in Ukraine and against the UK and our allies." Mildenhall is home to a Ukrainian drone plant that plans to create up to 500 jobs.
Ukrspecsystems, the company involved with the plant, has also been contacted for comment.
