Liverpool has completed the signing of Uruguayan center-back Ronald Araujo on a season-long loan from Barcelona. The deal includes an option for Liverpool to purchase the 27-year-old permanently. Araujo expressed his enthusiasm about joining the historic club, stating it was a necessary and ideal move for his career.
The Uruguayan international, who can also play at right-back, arrived at Barcelona from Boston River in 2018. He has since made over 200 appearances for the Catalan club, contributing to three La Liga titles and two Copa del Rey victories. Araujo was also appointed captain in January.
This acquisition comes as Liverpool sought to reinforce their defense following the departure of French international Ibrahima Konate, who transferred to Real Madrid on a free transfer. Araujo's previous performances for Barcelona have been highly praised, with one Spanish football commentator describing him as "a colossus" during their title-winning season, lauded as the best defender in La Liga at the time. However, the commentator also noted that injuries and lapses in concentration have affected his recent form, suggesting that a return to his peak performance would make him a valuable asset for Liverpool.
Araujo's contract with Barcelona extends until 2031, but he started only 11 league matches last season as Barcelona secured their 29th league championship. Liverpool is set to begin their Premier League campaign on Sunday, August 23, with an away match against Newcastle United.
