The Detroit Lions have released cornerback Terrion Arnold, a 2024 first-round draft pick, following his arrest on felony charges of armed robbery and kidnapping. Lions head coach Dan Campbell stated that the decision, while difficult, was made because it was what he felt was best for the team's success.
"It stinks. You never want to let go of a player — especially somebody that you’ve been around for a while here and you drafted and all that, and it’s unfortunate," Campbell said before a recent practice. "But we made the move we felt was best for us."
Arnold turned himself in on June 24 and is currently out on a $1 million bond. He is subject to home confinement, with exceptions for work and legal appointments, which allows him to train with other teams. His arraignment hearing is scheduled for August 13 in Tampa.
The release of Arnold opens up competition for the starting cornerback position alongside DJ Reed. Players expected to contend for the role include Ennis Rakestraw Jr., Rock Ya-Sin, and veterans Khalil Dorsey, Nick Whiteside, and Roger McCreary. The Lions also drafted Keith Abney II in the fifth round of the 2026 NFL Draft, who may now see increased opportunities.
"We feel pretty good in that room with the competition and those guys between veterans, young guys and ability," Campbell added.
Arnold cleared waivers and is an unrestricted free agent. His agent, Nicole Lynn, reported that as of July 10, four teams—the Indianapolis Colts, New York Jets, Seattle Seahawks, and Houston Texans—had contacted Arnold. He had reportedly worked out with the Texans and visited the other interested teams throughout July.
Arnold's attorney, Harvey Steinberg, expressed confidence that his client would soon sign with another team. Rock Ya-Sin, a teammate, acknowledged missing Arnold and expressed his support, stating, "From what I know of TA, he’s just a really good dude. Young guy that I have a lot of love and respect for. He’s going through a hard time right now."
