The third season of Taylor Sheridan's 'Lioness' introduces new pressures for Neal McNamara, portrayed by Dave Annable. His character, a respected surgeon and husband to CIA operative Joe McNamara (Zoe Saldaña), finds his marriage tested as the realities of his wife's dangerous profession spill into their home.
Annable explained that Sheridan's intention was to create a fully realized character in Neal, not merely a supporting role. "He wanted Neal to be a fleshed-out character with a real relationship with his wife," Annable stated in a recent interview. The series has previously depicted the McNamara family overcoming significant events, such as Kate's car accident in season one and Joe's near-fatal encounter in season two.
However, the season three premiere escalates the stakes when Joe is captured by enemy agents months after neutralizing threats within their own home. Annable described Neal's reaction to this event as one of "complete shock." Witnessing "a few dead bodies on his front lawn while his children slept upstairs is a real crisis moment for Neal," he added. This incident forces Neal to reassess his family's safety and the potential impact on his marriage.
Annable suggested that the proximity of danger to his family pushes Neal toward a critical juncture. "Everybody’s got some version of a breaking point," he said. "Once the ‘war’ has come to his house, Neal needs to reassess." While acknowledging the strength of Neal and Joe's relationship, Annable teased that Neal might be compelled to make difficult decisions to protect himself and their daughters as the season progresses, questioning "how much is too much? Is love always enough?"
The actor also touched on the unique dynamic of Joe's role in the partnership, where the woman is the one engaged in dangerous fieldwork, a reversal of traditional narratives. Annable noted Sheridan's commitment to developing Neal's character, including his work at the hospital, to provide a comprehensive portrayal of his life outside of Joe's clandestine activities.
Navigating the season's non-linear timeline presented a challenge, Annable admitted, but credited the script supervisor and directors for helping the cast stay oriented. He also shared his experiences working alongside Oscar winners Zoe Saldaña and Nicole Kidman, describing them as "unbelievable actresses" and noting moments of awe on set.
Regarding the potential for Neal to feel overwhelmed, Annable believes his character does grapple with losing himself amidst the unfolding crisis. Despite his demanding career as a surgeon, he questions how to fully concentrate on work when his wife is engaged in high-stakes missions and he is the primary caregiver for their daughters. The season begins with the couple in a "really happy place," Annable observed, only for their new reality to be "over very quickly," a narrative twist he attributes to Sheridan's style.
New episodes of 'Lioness' are released Sundays on Paramount+.
