The contractor that renovated the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool will also be responsible for its new repairs after officials announced the pool would be partially drained. Green Water Solutions, a company from Ohio, was awarded the initial renovation contract without a bidding process for $1.7 million.
Last month, the reflecting pool turned green days after its renovation was complete. Contractors were observed pouring bottles of hydrogen peroxide into the water in an attempt to combat an algae bloom. This persistent problem has plagued the pool, exacerbated by Washington's summer heat and the pool's shallow depth, which creates an environment conducive to algae growth. The Obama administration previously spent approximately $34 million on efforts to address these issues, but these attempts were unsuccessful in preventing the algae from returning.
Officials stated that the algae issue has now been resolved using nanobubbler technology. This method involves pumping tiny ozone bubbles into the water, which damage the algae's cells.
