A Southern California LGBTQ+ advocacy group is calling for a boycott of a new Harry Potter-themed train attraction in Perris, California, citing author J.K. Rowling's public statements on transgender issues.

R.I.S.E. Perris Pride, an LGBTQ+ advocacy group, is urging the public to avoid purchasing tickets for "Harry Potter: A Hogwarts Express Adventure," arguing that proceeds ultimately benefit Rowling. The group contends that Rowling's past comments and support for organizations that oppose certain transgender rights policies are harmful.

Ashley Williamson, lead director of R.I.S.E. Perris Pride, told the Los Angeles Times that buying tickets or merchandise associated with the Harry Potter franchise supports Rowling. "What’s really terrifying is that influence. It’s already being felt in the United States," Williamson stated. "There’s a trans genocide happening. It’s very serious."

Williamson, who identifies as nonbinary, also shared personal experiences of anti-LGBTQ+ harassment faced by members of their community in Perris, including slurs and vandalism. The group views urging a boycott as a way to support their community.

Rowling has faced years of criticism over her public statements and posts on X (formerly Twitter) regarding transgender women and sex-based rights. She has denied accusations of being anti-transgender, stating that she supports women's sex-based rights.

Despite the controversy surrounding Rowling, Warner Bros. Discovery and the attraction's operators emphasize the experience's focus on the Harry Potter franchise and its fans. Kathleen Wallis, vice president of global themed entertainment at Warner Bros. Discovery, said the company aims to create new experiences for the franchise's audience, many of whom grew up with the stories.

Jarrette Ireland, vice president and general manager of Rail Events Inc., the company operating the attraction, stated that the event welcomes all guests. "We’re really proud to welcome all guests to a great experience," Ireland said.

The "Harry Potter: A Hogwarts Express Adventure" opened this summer at the Southern California Railway Museum in Perris. The attraction transforms the museum into a Harry Potter-themed experience, featuring an interactive theatrical train ride with actors portraying Hogwarts students. Tickets range from approximately $72 to $93 per person.

The hourlong production includes live performances, audience participation, and encounters with magical creatures. Passengers are involved in challenges and a storyline focused on overcoming differences. The train cars are outfitted with theatrical effects to simulate travel through the Wizarding World.

The experience concludes with passengers casting the "Expecto Patronum" spell and entering a Hogsmeade-inspired area with themed food, drinks, and merchandise.

The attraction had sold nearly 11,000 tickets in advance as of July 23. It is scheduled to run through September 27, with plans for additional stops across North America and potential expansion to the United Kingdom.
