Lena Dunham Welcomes First Child Via Surrogate, Reflects on Endometriosis Journey

Lena Dunham has welcomed her first child, a baby girl born via surrogate, with her husband Luis Felber. The actress and writer shared the news in an op-ed for Vogue, detailing the emotional moment she first spoke to her newborn.

Encouraged by the midwife, Dunham's first words to her daughter were: "Hello. I’m your mama. You look nothing like I thought you would, but exactly right. We’ve been waiting for you, do you know that? It was so nice of you to come." She added that she was "bashful and dizzy with joy."

Dunham underwent a total hysterectomy in 2018 due to years of endometriosis-related pain, a procedure that ended her possibility of conceiving and carrying a child. She had previously expressed that carrying her own children had been her "dream."

"Some people don't dream about being mothers, but I had, and it was a big part of my identity that I was going to do it someday in that way," Dunham said in April on "Today with Jenna and Sheinelle." She has since come to terms with her journey, finding excitement in various ways families can be built and expressing gratitude for whichever path her family took.

Reflecting on the surrogacy process, Dunham stated she did not feel jealousy towards the woman who carried her child. Instead, she described a different kind of envy directed at the baby for having the chance to be held by someone who radiated safety and capability.

In June of the previous year, Dunham spoke to The Sunday Times about her hysterectomy, describing it as "a grief but it was also a relief." At that time, she and Felber indicated they were "expanding" their family "in new ways."

In a 2020 essay for Harper's Magazine, Dunham discussed the significant emotional and financial toll of pursuing motherhood when unable to conceive or carry a child. She wrote about the impossibility of forcing nature and the irony that accepting this reality may have prepared her for parenthood.

Dunham and Felber met during the COVID-19 lockdown and began dating shortly thereafter. Dunham first publicly confirmed their relationship in April 2021, calling Felber "the greatest person I've ever met."
