Tyler Boebert, the 21-year-old son of U.S. Representative Lauren Boebert, has been sentenced to a minimum of 20 days in jail with work release privileges after pleading guilty to misdemeanor child abuse without injury. The charges stem from a July 2025 incident where his young son was found unsupervised outside the congresswoman's Windsor home.
According to Deputy District Attorney Brice Rudolph, this was the third time in 2025 that the toddler was found wandering unattended. The previous instances included the child being found near a busy road and close to a body of water. "Once is a mistake, twice is a coincidence, and three times is a pattern," Rudolph stated during Tyler Boebert's sentencing hearing in Weld County.
In February, Tyler Boebert faced another child abuse charge after his then 2-year-old son was found unsupervised at Lauren Boebert's house. His defense attorney, Joseph Gavaldon, confirmed that this charge was later dropped.
During the sentencing, Rep. Boebert pleaded with the judge for leniency, arguing that jail time would result in orphaning the child for crucial hours. "Mercy here, your honor, is not softness. Mercy is the difference between correcting the father and orphaning a child for the hours that matter most," she said, describing the actions as a "failure of communication" rather than cruelty.
Gavaldon characterized Tyler Boebert as a devoted father, mentioning that he had installed locks and cameras at his own residence to prevent the child from leaving. He also described the toddler as a "Houdini" going through a "Lewis and Clark" phase.
Judge Michele Meyer acknowledged concerns about the recurring nature of the incidents, stating, "It appears as though Mr. Boebert has taken this seriously, but I can’t ignore the fact that these are two incidents that put his son in serious harm’s way." She sentenced him to 12 months of probation in addition to the jail time.
Tyler Boebert has a history of legal issues. He was arrested last month on charges including sexual exploitation of a child, reportedly stemming from an alleged sex tape made in early 2024 with a then-17-year-old girlfriend. Rep. Boebert has previously stated, "I love my son" and that the family takes the allegations seriously.
In 2024, Tyler Boebert was also charged with 22 counts, including felonies, related to alleged thefts. He pleaded guilty to one count of attempted identity theft in October of that year, with the remaining charges dismissed as part of a plea agreement that included a deferred judgment and 80 hours of community service.
