Pro-Trump activist Laura Loomer has apologized for downplaying the realities of the war in Ukraine, stating she was wrong to have dismissed its severity and fallen for Russian propaganda. Loomer's change of heart followed a visit to Kyiv this week, where she experienced an air raid and heard firsthand accounts of alleged Russian war crimes.
"I feel like such an a–hole for minimizing the struggle of Ukrainians for the last 5 years," Loomer wrote on the social media platform X. She added that she had been influenced by Russian narratives, including the false claim that Ukraine is full of Nazi sympathizers.
Loomer stated that her decision to visit Ukraine was motivated by a desire to see the conflict for herself. Upon witnessing the aftermath of attacks, including alleged atrocities in Bucha and the torture of Ukrainian prisoners of war, she altered her perspective.
"On day one, I’ve already seen photos of dead priests in Bucha murdered by Russia and I saw the mass grave where the bodies of murdered Christians were placed after Russia sent forces from Chechnya to massacre innocent people," Loomer recounted. She also reported speaking with officials who rescue POWs and seeing photographs of Ukrainian POWs with swastikas engraved on their foreheads by Russian forces.
Loomer acknowledged that Russian propaganda is highly effective, particularly in information warfare aimed at influencing international support for Ukraine. She stated her intention to keep her previous, now-retracted, statements online as a testament to the power of Russian disinformation. "I was wrong! I have a responsibility to correct the record. Russia is very good at information warfare," Loomer posted.
The office of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy acknowledged Loomer's shift in perspective, noting that personal experience is the most effective way to counter Russian misinformation. "It is really important that @LauraLoomer is in Ukraine and sees things with her own eyes as they are," the president's office stated on X. "There is no better way to get informed opinion than through personal experience which allows [one] to deal with Russian propaganda."
Loomer, an ally of former President Donald Trump, has been a target of pro-Russian online channels that have sought to mock her for her past statements on the war. The image below depicts the aftermath of a drone strike in Sumy, Ukraine.
