Newly released Los Angeles Police Department footage documents a violent confrontation in Boyle Heights that resulted in an officer being struck in the chest by gunfire but saved by his ballistic vest. The incident, which began on June 9 at approximately 1:47 p.m., involved a police pursuit that ended in a crash and a subsequent foot chase.
Officers from the LAPD's Newton and Hollenbeck Patrol Divisions initiated a traffic stop on a gray pickup truck near Washington Boulevard and Alameda Street due to a suspected altered or missing temporary license plate. The driver refused to stop, leading to a pursuit captured by dashboard cameras. The truck eventually crashed into an embankment on Garnet Street near Marietta Street in Boyle Heights.
As officers closed in on the suspect who had exited the wrecked vehicle and fled on foot, the individual turned, produced a handgun, and fired multiple rounds at the pursuing officers. One officer was hit in the chest and knocked backward by the impact. LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell stated that the officer's ballistic vest was credited with saving his life.
Other officers returned fire, striking the suspect and ending the engagement at the scene. The suspect sustained critical injuries during the exchange of gunfire. Evidence recovered after the shooting, as shown in an LAPD video briefing, included the suspect's handgun, the impact on the officer's body armor, and damage to a patrol vehicle.
The released video includes footage from the pursuit, the crash, the foot chase, and the shootout itself, with body camera footage capturing the moment the suspect fired at the officers. The incident underscores the dangers faced by law enforcement officers during routine traffic stops that escalate into violent encounters.
