Minnesota Timberwolves guard LaMelo Ball has been sued for allegedly failing to pay rent and associated fines totaling over $181,500 for two condominiums in Charlotte, North Carolina. The lawsuit was filed just weeks after Ball was traded from the Charlotte Hornets to the Timberwolves on June 25.
Court records indicate that Ball entered into an agreement in December 2020 to rent two units in an uptown Charlotte condominium complex. The properties were formerly owned by ex-Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton. According to the suit filed by Agape Property Management Group, which is reportedly partly owned by Newton, Ball occupied one unit while subletting the other to his manager and mentor, former NBA player Jermaine Jackson.
Ball had agreed to purchase his residence in May 2024 but continued to allow Jackson to sublet the second unit. The lawsuit alleges that as of July 1, 2026, Ball and Jackson had fallen significantly behind on rent payments for the second unit, accumulating a debt exceeding $181,500. In addition to the unpaid rent, the suit claims over $90,000 in unpaid HOA compliance fines were accrued.
Agape Property Management Group had previously filed a lawsuit against Jackson concerning the matter. During a hearing for that case, Jackson's attorney reportedly claimed that the apartment was in disrepair, citing issues with necessary repairs and mold treatment as reasons for the delayed rent payments. That initial lawsuit, which did not name Ball, was dismissed on June 3.
The current lawsuit names both Ball and Jackson as defendants, alleging breach of contract. The plaintiff states that the defendants' failure to pay rent and vacate the premises has resulted in substantial financial harm, including HOA fines, lost rental income, and other damages. Representatives for the parties involved could not be reached for comment.
