As NBA free agency officially began, the Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly prioritizing the acquisition of Jonathan Kuminga to address a glaring need at the forward position. The team's efforts to reconstruct its roster this offseason have been notable, marked by significant re-signings and trades. The departure of Rui Hachimura to the rival Los Angeles Clippers, agreeing to a two-year, $28 million deal, further emphasized the necessity for the Lakers to secure wing talent.
The Lakers have already made substantial moves, re-signing Austin Reaves to a four-year, $185 million contract and completing a sign-and-trade for Walker Kessler with the Utah Jazz, securing him on a four-year, $130 million deal. These moves are seen as locking in cornerstones alongside star guard Luka Doncic. Additional rotation pieces like Quentin Grimes, Sandro Mamukelashvili, and Collin Sexton have also been added, aiming to infuse youth and versatility into the team's bench.
Kuminga, described as a significant priority for the Lakers in free agency, fits the team's need for physical presence, youth, and athleticism. Standing at 6-foot-7 and weighing 225 pounds, the 23-year-old Kuminga, formerly a first-round pick of the Warriors, is seen as an ideal complement to Doncic and Reaves. His tenure with the Warriors included being part of their 2021-22 championship team, and he averaged a career-high 16.1 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.2 assists in the 2023-24 season.
While Kuminga is not without his limitations, including a career 33.2% three-point shooting percentage on low volume and inefficiencies in shot creation, he is considered among the realistic available options to fill a starting role. His defensive versatility, with the ability to guard multiple positions due to his athleticism and length, is a key asset. The Lakers would rely on him to guard top offensive threats, a role the team needs given its current defensive capabilities.
Compared to Hachimura, who provided shooting and spacing with a career 41.5% three-point rate, Kuminga offers stronger rebounding, finishing, and perimeter and help defense. His younger age and fewer NBA seasons also suggest greater potential for development. Kuminga has also shown growth as a passer in recent years.
Other potential targets for the Lakers to address the wing need include Ziaire Williams, Bruce Brown, Matisse Thybulle, and Ochai Agbaji. However, Kuminga is viewed as possessing superior talent, upside, and the ability to fill multiple positional needs, making him the Lakers' primary target.
